Corned Beef with Rice

Well I've been running outta money so I've been "cooking" the past couple of days. Here's a college budget food tip from Keith: corned beef with rice...

Parish Cafe

Went to the Parish Cafe on Boylston the other day with Keith and Yuen. Passed by it when we went to Grill 23 which reminded me that I wanted to go check it out. It's a sandwich place that has sandwiches designed by different chefs around Boston.

It's a lot of food. The Burke is by Jim Burke, owner of the Tuscan Grille in Waltham. The sandwich was really good. The Oleana is by Ana Sortun, the chef/owner of Oleana in Cambridge. We were all thinking wow, a mussel sandwich. I had a bite, and Keith put it best when he said it's really good, but not something one could eat very often. Quite unique though.

Turner Fisheries

It's Thanksgiving. Not gonna be eating much tonight since I'm not going home this year, so here's what I had when my dad was here. The pictures from Turner Fisheries didn't turn out very well (in fact, they're straight awful). I'm getting the feeling I forgot to turn on macro focus. The lighting was horrible too. So here's what I was able to salvage.

warm chocolate cake warm chocolate cake There were lots of other dishes, but the pictures are pretty horrible. I had the bouillabaisse and the haddock. The bouillabaise was a big appetizer! The funny thing is they gave me a bib and one of those crab/lobster crackers, but there was no crab or lobster in the dish. Hmm. Still good though. The haddock was really nice. I think haddock is supposed to be a real Boston fish. The hash thing it came with was surprisingly tasty as well. All very filling - I couldn't finish it. Solid remarks from everyone around the table on pretty much everything. People agreed the clam chowder was good, but not served hot enough. Still got more updates to catch up...

Armani Cafe

Got quite a bit to update. I'll start with lunch yesterday at the Armani Cafe on Newbury, inside Emporio.

gnocchi with chicken cacciatore gnocchi with chicken cacciatore I must say this meal was very good! I'd never been before. There's an Armani Cafe at the store in San Francisco too, but I've never been there either. I always thought it was a weird/interesting idea to have a restaurant inside a shop like that. Everything was really good though. Mozzarella was tasty, mussels were great (and the juice/sauce with the piece of bread was awesome). The gnocchi was fluffy and the chicken was tender (even the white meat!). Gotta go for now, big updating coming soon again.

Grill 23

My dad came into town today, and we had dinner at Grill 23 along with Keith, Mike, and Snezhana. Get ready for the BIGGEST ARTHUR HUNGRY POST EVER. Here goes...

sirloin salad sirloin salad

steak tartare steak tartare

foie gras foie gras

kobe delmonico steak, fried green tomatoes kobe delmonico steak, fried green tomatoes

grape sorbet grape sorbet

meyer lemon and chocolate panna cotta meyer lemon and chocolate panna cotta

pear cobbler pear cobbler Dunno where to begin. The appetizers were great all around. I haven't had foie gras since I was in San Francisco. Mike's steak tartare appetizer was tasty... pieces were cut larger than usual, but very good. Dad had a good clam chowder, and Keith had a very good fried calamari. They looked pretty normal though. Basically everyone had the Kobe steak... when I see Kobe on the menu, I just can't say no. It was really good - not quite the same as in Japan, but still excellent. We also ordered a ton of sides, including fries, onion rings, hash browns, creamed spinach, and fried green tomatoes (pictured with the steak). They were good. Especially liked the fries and the onion rings. Spinach was less creamy than usual. But... THEY PUT KETCHUP ON THE TOMATOES. No. Sorry. That is unacceptable! Desserts were nice too. Several people had the grape sorbet. I had the panna cotta, which was very smooth... I like panna cotta a lot. Dad had the cobbler which was alright. More to come tomorrow...

Maluken again

Caught a screening of Gothika at Fenway tonight. So in Kenmore Square, there's only 3 main options: Bertucci's, Uno, and Maluken. So we opted for sushi... again... (Audobon is a newly discovered option, but we already walked too far in the other direction when we thought of it)

Brasserie Jo

Went to Brasserie Jo last night, over near Copley. I've been there a couple of times before and it was solid. Tonight, we had a steak frites, and the "shrimp bag" (was curious about it the last times). Also had a frisee salad but I forgot to take a pic of that.

classic steak frites classic steak frites

shrimp bag shrimp bag The steak was tasty. The fries were very good - better than the last time I went when I had a steak tartare. It came slightly overdone but not bad at all. I think that hunk of whatever butter stuff was a nice addition. The shrimp bag was a phyllo pastry thing with TONS of shrimp inside, along with some random veggies and stuff. It didn't look quite as nice after I broke it apart. It was also really good, and surprisingly big. I couldn't finish the shrimp. The frisee was actually the best part of the meal I think... Really tasty, and awesome croutons. I love croutons. The baguette they give you is also pretty damn good.

Min Sok / Choe's Cafe

Didn't get a chance to update recently. Got a three day weekend this weekend cuz of the whole BU president thing. Anyway, here are some pics from Min Sok aka Choe's Cafe, the Korean place over on Commonwealth... next to McDonald's in West. Went the other day with Keith, Mike, and Snezhana.

California Pizza Kitchen

Went to California Pizza Kitchen last night in Prudential. I actually like that place a lot. I wanted to get the spinach artichoke dip but nobody else wanted it, so we got the shrimp rolls instead, and 2 pizzas.

california club pizza with grilled chicken, bacon, lettuce, and tomatoes california club pizza with grilled chicken, bacon, lettuce, and tomatoes It was alright, but I prefer the spinach artichoke dip to the shrimp rolls still. The steak pizza was pretty good, but I liked the roasted garlic chicken one I had last time better. The club pizza was kinda weird - you can't see the chicken and bacon which is under all the lettuce, and we got it with no avocado despite my protest. And surprise... it tasted like a sandwich. It was all good, but I'm gonna go back to the more normal pizzas next time I think.

Chart House

Tried to go to Finale for dessert. When we got there, they told us it'd be a 2 hour wait. We searched for alternatives. We ended up deciding to go to the Chart House, because they had a good warm chocolate cake and it'd be faster to actually go there than wait. We had an appetizer while we waited for the cake, which takes 30 minutes of prep there.

chocolate molten lava cake chocolate molten lava cake The shrimp was surprisingly tasty. We wanted calamari, but we went so late that they were out of it. Shrimp was good though... we wanted something crunchy. The cake was good just like last time. I think the warm chocolate cake has become a staple dessert everywhere. Chart House does it well... Keith and Val say that Finale does it better. Val insists she would have waited 2 hours.

Nud Pob soup

Today, I tried to go home between IR and econ. Sadly, the T happened to die for the half hour window that I was waiting, and by the time one finally came (it was full anyway) I didn't have time to go back home anymore. It was also FREEZING today, so I walked over to Nud Pob to try and kill the rest of my free time.

tom yum noodle soup with chicken tom yum noodle soup with chicken I was hoping it'd be more spicy... I remember it being more spicy when I had it last year. Still pretty good though. Having ground chicken in a noodle soup can be kinda hard to eat, but it tastes good. Warmed me up a bit a least.
