Bertucci's

Went for Bertucci's a while ago. They added some new seafood stuff on their menu.

veal picatta veal picatta I think I'm starting to like Bertucci's less. Their rolls are damn good, but I'm realizing that the entrees and stuff really aren't that cheap. Carlo's down the street has far superior food... it's a proper restaurant, and now that I think of it something like a chicken or veal marsala is about the same price. Gonna go there again soon - went once and didn't have my camera. The rolls at Bertucci's are still awesome though. About the rolls though... a lot of people know one of my pet peeves is the "too-friendly chain service" that Bertucci's exemplifies so well. The first time I went to Bertucci's, the waiter asked if it was the first time we were there, and naturally we said yes. Little did I know he would go into a 5 minute tirade about how at Bertucci's, they want to create the authentic Italian experience. The rolls came, and he went on and on about how in Italy people eat bread with olive oil. We could even season it with some salt if we wanted to! The next time I went, it was the first time for someone else, and imagine that - the same thing happened. Now I'm sure to say no every time. Gimme a break guys, you're a chain Italian place that focuses on decent brick-oven pizza. The food snob side of me wants to smack those waiters and demand some balsamic vinegar. I appreciate friendly service at these not-fast-food-but-sit-down-chain restaurants, but often it's so obviously prepared/trained that it's just weird.

Flank Steak

Had a busy week so I didn't get to update. Anyway, here is what I cooked for V-Day...

finale cheesecake finale cheesecake I used a recipe from Food Network for the pasta (From 30 Minute Meals) and a Boston Globe recipe for the steak. The sauce for the pasta was pretty much just shallots, garlic, tomatoes, chicken stock, vodka, and some heavy cream. The steak was marinated in olive oil, red wine, garlic, scallions, rosemary, mustard, brown sugar, and orange zest. It turned out pretty damn good if you ask me... The cheesecake I bought from Finale (expensive!) but it tasted pretty good too.

Sadly, I'm back on the college diet of delivery and Super 88, so not much interesting lately. Here's a recent meal at Kayuga.

Behind again on my updates, grr... I had dinner on my birthday with Becky at Audubon on Beacon St.

I got adventurous with the pear/brie sandwich, since I wasn't too hungry anyway. Turned out to be really good. They also make a good (and cheap) salad, which for some reason is hard to find around here.

Maggiano's Little Italy

We had a sort of small pre birthday dinner last Sunday at Maggiano's Little Italy with me, Becky, Mike, Dave, Ahrie, Keith, Val, Yuen, and Ginger.

Mike and Keith both had the mahi mahi and it was good and they both liked it - I haven't had mahi mahi in a while. I had the ravioli. It turnes out it was baked and was on the rich/creamy side, but it was alright. Becky had the rigatoni which I thought was better. They have a "family style" option for $24 a person that looks like a ton of food... gonna try it some time when there's more hungry people.

Food from France

Here's the whole foie gras that my dad brought back from France. I took it with me to Boston... Used some fresh white bread from the Taiwanese bakery across the street.

Les Zygomates

Due to a strange series of events, my dad ended up in Boston tonight. He's flying back to SF tomorrow too, but earlier than me. For my last meal in Boston of 2003, we went to Les Zygomates for some bistro food.

steak frites steak frites

seared cod cheeks seared cod cheeks I had the more usual of the two, a well-executed steak frites (with, as you can see, a hefty portion of some flavored butter on top). Steak was good, better than Brasserie Jo. Fries were nice and crunchy. My dad had the seared cod cheeks - a prix fixe offering - very interesting and very tasty. The place had a live jazz band playing, and it was quite a rowdy atmosphere. Food was really good... hope to go back some time. Tomorrow, I'm off to SF, then Vancouver for a week. Next posts should be coming from there. After that, I head back to SF again until the 11th.

Parish Cafe

Well, here's what I ate last before my sickness this past week. I went to Parish Cafe again.

henri's veal pastrami henri's veal pastrami This is a pastrami sandwich from the chef at Chez Henri. Not bad, but I liked what I had the first time better. I don't think this caused my sickness. Haven't been eating much at all because of the sickness, finals, etc... Things should pick up again as I'm going back home finally on Sunday. Going to Vancouver for a week, then I'll be back in SF for a while too. Looking forward to it.

Parish Cafe

Went to the Parish Cafe on Boylston the other day with Keith and Yuen. Passed by it when we went to Grill 23 which reminded me that I wanted to go check it out. It's a sandwich place that has sandwiches designed by different chefs around Boston.

It's a lot of food. The Burke is by Jim Burke, owner of the Tuscan Grille in Waltham. The sandwich was really good. The Oleana is by Ana Sortun, the chef/owner of Oleana in Cambridge. We were all thinking wow, a mussel sandwich. I had a bite, and Keith put it best when he said it's really good, but not something one could eat very often. Quite unique though.

Turner Fisheries

It's Thanksgiving. Not gonna be eating much tonight since I'm not going home this year, so here's what I had when my dad was here. The pictures from Turner Fisheries didn't turn out very well (in fact, they're straight awful). I'm getting the feeling I forgot to turn on macro focus. The lighting was horrible too. So here's what I was able to salvage.

warm chocolate cake warm chocolate cake There were lots of other dishes, but the pictures are pretty horrible. I had the bouillabaisse and the haddock. The bouillabaise was a big appetizer! The funny thing is they gave me a bib and one of those crab/lobster crackers, but there was no crab or lobster in the dish. Hmm. Still good though. The haddock was really nice. I think haddock is supposed to be a real Boston fish. The hash thing it came with was surprisingly tasty as well. All very filling - I couldn't finish it. Solid remarks from everyone around the table on pretty much everything. People agreed the clam chowder was good, but not served hot enough. Still got more updates to catch up...

gnocchi with chicken cacciatore gnocchi with chicken cacciatore I must say this meal was very good! I'd never been before. There's an Armani Cafe at the store in San Francisco too, but I've never been there either. I always thought it was a weird/interesting idea to have a restaurant inside a shop like that. Everything was really good though. Mozzarella was tasty, mussels were great (and the juice/sauce with the piece of bread was awesome). The gnocchi was fluffy and the chicken was tender (even the white meat!). Gotta go for now, big updating coming soon again.

Grill 23

My dad came into town today, and we had dinner at Grill 23 along with Keith, Mike, and Snezhana. Get ready for the BIGGEST ARTHUR HUNGRY POST EVER. Here goes...

pear cobbler pear cobbler Dunno where to begin. The appetizers were great all around. I haven't had foie gras since I was in San Francisco. Mike's steak tartare appetizer was tasty... pieces were cut larger than usual, but very good. Dad had a good clam chowder, and Keith had a very good fried calamari. They looked pretty normal though. Basically everyone had the Kobe steak... when I see Kobe on the menu, I just can't say no. It was really good - not quite the same as in Japan, but still excellent. We also ordered a ton of sides, including fries, onion rings, hash browns, creamed spinach, and fried green tomatoes (pictured with the steak). They were good. Especially liked the fries and the onion rings. Spinach was less creamy than usual. But... THEY PUT KETCHUP ON THE TOMATOES. No. Sorry. That is unacceptable! Desserts were nice too. Several people had the grape sorbet. I had the panna cotta, which was very smooth... I like panna cotta a lot. Dad had the cobbler which was alright. More to come tomorrow...

Maluken again

Caught a screening of Gothika at Fenway tonight. So in Kenmore Square, there's only 3 main options: Bertucci's, Uno, and Maluken. So we opted for sushi... again... (Audobon is a newly discovered option, but we already walked too far in the other direction when we thought of it)

Brasserie Jo

Went to Brasserie Jo last night, over near Copley. I've been there a couple of times before and it was solid. Tonight, we had a steak frites, and the "shrimp bag" (was curious about it the last times). Also had a frisee salad but I forgot to take a pic of that.

classic steak frites classic steak frites

shrimp bag shrimp bag The steak was tasty. The fries were very good - better than the last time I went when I had a steak tartare. It came slightly overdone but not bad at all. I think that hunk of whatever butter stuff was a nice addition. The shrimp bag was a phyllo pastry thing with TONS of shrimp inside, along with some random veggies and stuff. It didn't look quite as nice after I broke it apart. It was also really good, and surprisingly big. I couldn't finish the shrimp. The frisee was actually the best part of the meal I think... Really tasty, and awesome croutons. I love croutons. The baguette they give you is also pretty damn good.
