I wasn't really hungry so I didn't feel like a bowl of pho. I just got some rolls to keep him company. Pretty standard stuff. He said his pho was good though.
alpine burger - sauteed mushrooms and gruyere
I had the usual, an alpine burger. I maintain that even for $9 (with fries), Mo's is THE BEST hamburger I have had anywhere, and cannot be beat. Bartley's in Boston can't touch it. Zuni ain't got nothin'. Mo's is the best. Nice and medium rare like I ordered it, so juicy that it takes skill to eat it properly... I love Mo's.
Auntie Margie's potluck
My mom brought some weird kind of tofu dumplings and also a pork knuckle thing. There was also a tofu dish with Shanghai hairy crab. Auntie Margie made a curry... Lots of stuff. I had to leave early to go to Santa Rosa.

Sooo good. Ahh, the memories of HS days. One thing I failed to capture is Marina Sub guy's AMAZING avocado cutting ability. Anyone who goes to Marina Sub knows what I'm talking about. Simply incredible.
Pho Bich Nga - authentic Vietnamese cuisine
Some people think Pho Shizzle could be a fake. I'll give you the arthur hungry guarantee that Pho Bich Nga does in fact exist. It's in Vancouver, on Kingsway, and I took the picture myself! We didn't actually try it though as we were there at like 4pm in between meals. That will be for another day...

All that for freakin $11 Canadian. That's like 8 bucks. I couldn't finish it, and it was good too. Vancouver is ridiculous.

It was quite good. The bonito sashimi was huge - we actually both ate a piece before I remembered to take that picture. The scallops were good too... they used two kinds of mushrooms in it. We had two kinds of gyoza, pork/vegetable and pork/chives. The chive one tasted too much like Chinese dumplings... we both agreed the vegetable was better. Not as good as Sapporo though, of course. We saw pork "toro" on the menu and we were curious about it. It turned out to be some kind of cha siu with some sauce on it. It was actually pretty good. A bit salty, but at 3 something Canadian it's not like we got ripped off.

The cake actually used fresh mangos, so it was better than I was expecting. Good stuff.

Pretty good stuff. The shrimp were too small, and not worth the effort... Lots of flavor though, and the sauce was awesome for dipping the breadlike sesame bun things. The duck was nice but we were pretty full by then.

Sorry bout the crappy descriptions... The stuff is kinda weird to translate into English. The chinese donut was alright, but not great. The potstickers were actually really good... soupy inside like a siu long bao. They also had a good scallion pancake which I failed to photograph before it was all eaten.

The toro was really good. Sea bass was good too - I don't eat it much but I like the chewy texture. Sockeye salmon is a local Pacific wild salmon... really bright orange, nice flavor. Can never get enough Japanese.
prawn and fennel risotto
Not bad. The appetizer buffet has a lot of food to choose from. My aunt and my cousin Karen both unwisely went with a "BBQ Pork Congee" which turned out pretty bad. Rule #1: don't order Chinese food at western restaurants. My risotto was pretty good though.

Everything was pretty good in general. Vancouver has good sushi. The uni roll was good, though not the same as what I had in Hokkaido. This place did something interesting with the Dynamite roll - they put corn flakes in it which made it crunchy. It was interesting. Also had a piece of kanpachi not pictured... always enjoy kanpachi.

I almost always order the same thing here. I actually like their ham and cheese crepe the best - I think it's better than Ti Couz. Always a solid lunch, and a good deal too.

steak frites
seared cod cheeks
I had the more usual of the two, a well-executed steak frites (with, as you can see, a hefty portion of some flavored butter on top). Steak was good, better than Brasserie Jo. Fries were nice and crunchy. My dad had the seared cod cheeks - a prix fixe offering - very interesting and very tasty. The place had a live jazz band playing, and it was quite a rowdy atmosphere. Food was really good... hope to go back some time.
Tomorrow, I'm off to SF, then Vancouver for a week. Next posts should be coming from there. After that, I head back to SF again until the 11th.
henri's veal pastrami
This is a pastrami sandwich from the chef at Chez Henri. Not bad, but I liked what I had the first time better. I don't think this caused my sickness. Haven't been eating much at all because of the sickness, finals, etc... Things should pick up again as I'm going back home finally on Sunday. Going to Vancouver for a week, then I'll be back in SF for a while too. Looking forward to it.
